If you are looking for a great place for lunch or dinner this is the spot to be. They serve a full menu for lunch, but if you haven’t experienced their Dim Sum (served everyday) you have got to check it out. For those who are not familiar with Dim Sum, It is a very popular way to enjoy lunch with a small or large group of people. Dim Sum literally means “touching the heart”, it is a style of dining where customers can choose between a wide variety of dishes in small portions that include seafood, meat, vegetables, and desserts/fruits. The dishes are typically served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim Sum is usually accompanied with tea as well. This style of dining is very popular throughout China and in metropolitan areas with large ethnic neighborhoods. If you have not had a chance to experience Dim Sum we highly recommend it.
As you walk into the lobby area diners are greeted by several large fish tanks featuring a variety of fresh catches and shellfish. Whether you are in the mood for fish or other seafood the only other way to get it any fresher would be to grab a fishing pole and some bait. Sunflower Chinese Restaurant offers a variety of different ways to have your selections prepared. When it comes to lobster they offer it steamed or Cantonese Style. We were really impressed when we noticed a live Alaskan King Crab in one of the tanks. This is the first time we have noticed this offering in Columbus, Ohio. Most if not all Alaskan King Crab is usually caught, cooked, and frozen on the fishing vessel, allowing for easy transportation to most restaurants. Mr. Chung has taken it to the next level not only offering the legs but the entire crab to be enjoyed by diners and prepared anyway that one prefers.
At Sunflower Chinese Restaurant they feature only the highest of quality ingredients and with the freshest of vegetables available. We sampled a few of Mr. Chung’s specialties and they were absolutely divine. The House Wonton Soup ($3.25) is loaded with pork, water chestnuts, snow peas, carrots, bok choy, thinly sliced bamboo shoots, and topped with green scallions. This soup was served piping hot and was far from your traditional wonton soups. The Spring Rolls ($2.25) were perfectly prepared with a light crisp breading which was flash fried to a golden brown and loaded with shrimp and various fresh vegetables accompanied with sweet and sour sauce as well as the traditional spicy hot mustard that we just can’t seem to get enough of. For our entrée we enjoyed the Pork with Baby Bamboo shoots ($11.55) the pork was cooked to perfection with baby bamboo shoots, black forest mushrooms, and was finished in a delicious spicy sauce. Depending on the individual and their level of heat they prefer each dish can be either tuned up or down for one’s desired taste. All dishes are served with either steamed rice, fried rice, or for the health conscious brown rice.
If you are dining with a group Sunflower Chinese Restaurant is a great spot. Whether there are 4-10 diners they have prepared a menu for all tastes. For $52 four diners can enjoy a complete meal choosing their appetizers, soups, entrees, and desserts. 6 people $83, 8 people $118, 10 people $188. If you are looking for “The Best” Chinese in the city you don’t have to look further than Sunflower Chinese Restaurant.
